People always discussed and discriminated homosexuals without thinking how they feel. The Chinese novel of Lillian Lee brings to the readers a problem of homosexuality. After the first English translation of this book was published, they also released the film made by this story. A lot of people argue what is better â€" a film or a novel, but each of them are great and gives us a great opportunity to enjoy and think. In our society, homosexuals are viewed with disgust, non-acceptance and even aggression. Such people usually become an object of discrimination and mockery, they have to hide their orientation, especially from relatives and friends who cant support them but only judge and deride them, at the same moment feeling ashamed and unpleasantly with accepting them as they are. Of course, nowadays our society changed their view on homosexuals, in some countries such people can have legal relationship with their partner, so it means people start understand that gays are not sick people who need help from psychiatrists, but they are just usual people that only have different form of love. The novel shows suffering of all Chinese people The main character of the novel is a man named Xiao Douzi; he is a homosexual that lives at the time when such people are discriminated and mocked by society. This person is quite attractive and handsome, and he plays a woman on stage. He is falling in love with his best friend and partner on stage Xiao Shitou. But Shitou falls in love with a woman who works as a prostitute, and agrees to marry her and set her free from this awful job. After marriage, Douzi feels betrayed and abandoned; he suffers and as a result, gets addicted to opium. As all people who cant accept homosexuals, Shitous wife try to make everything to keep her husband away from his friend Douzi. Despite on wifes will, Shitou worries about his mate and he even helps him to get off the addiction to drugs, and he also doesnt judge his friend for being homosexual. Here we can say that Douzis addiction can be a symbol of wrong decisions, mistakes and crimes people ever made in their trying to set them free from humiliatio n and pain. Shitous wife is expecting for a baby, but unexpectedly she loses it. This symbolizes a new hope that shouldnt come true, just exactly as China fell and appeared under control of communists. Later, Shitou rejects his wife and she cant forgive him this betrayal and hangs herself feeling desperate. After this incident, Douzi and Shitou feel reconnected. The death of wife symbolizes ending and oppression. It shows to us how the Chinese people were frustrated and lost with suffering and pain because of war. Only after Maos death China got a possibility to renew and re-birth, making people lives better. When Douzi and Shitou are together again, they are able to forgive each other for all bad things they did and said earlier. This means that people of China should live in peace, understanding, and harmony with each other, and this is only the way for the entire nation to be strong and happy. As we can see, the novel brings to readers a lot of hidden problems, and some of these problems cannot be defined right away. We read this book and its possible to think during and after reading, and find some new symbols that author put there to tell us about. From the very beginning, this novel might seem just a story about homosexuality, but when we read more and more, we can see the author didnt view only this subject, but put together problems of China and tried to tell us about them through all acts that happened with its characters. The entire story illustrates the feelings of Chinese people in the political turmoil of the middle of 20th century, and this idea goes through the whole book, from the first page to the last one.
